Ingredients

  • 2 cups rolled oats old-fashioned oats preferred
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 medium apples peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar optional, for extra sweetness
  • 1 tablespoon butter melted, for greasing and topping
  • 1 pinch salt

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Baking dish
  • Saucepan

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease your baking dish with a bit of melted butter.
  2. Combine the rolled oats, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt in a mixing bowl. Stir well to evenly distribute the spices.
  3. Add the milk and brown sugar to the dry mixture, stirring until the oats are fully coated and the mixture starts to thicken slightly.
  4. Spoon the sliced apples into the prepared baking dish, spreading them out evenly across the bottom.
  5. Pour the oat mixture over the sliced apples, distributing it evenly and pressing down gently so the oats settle into the apples.
  6. Dot the top with small bits of melted butter, which will give a lightly crispy edge once baked.
  7. Place the dish in the oven and bake for about 25 minutes, until the top is golden and the mixture is bubbling around the edges.
  8. Remove the baked oatmeal from the oven and let it cool slightly—this helps it set a little and makes serving easier.
  9. Scoop out portions and serve warm, optionally topped with a drizzle of honey or a dollop of yogurt for extra comfort.

Notes

For a crunchier top, broil the dish for the last 2 minutes, keeping a close eye to prevent burning.
