Microwave French Toast in a Mug

This dish involves soaking bread slices in a mixture of milk, eggs, and spices, then microwaving until set and fluffy. The final product has a soft, custard-like texture with a golden-brown top, resembling traditional French toast but prepared quickly in the microwave.

Ingredients

  • 1 slice bread preferably slightly stale or firm
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon ground
  • 1 drop vanilla extract
  • pinch salt
  • optional butter or cooking spray for greasing the mug

Equipment

  • Microwave-safe mug
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk or fork
  • Measuring spoons
  • Toothpick or skewer (optional for testing doneness)

Method

  1. Tear the bread slice into small pieces and place them in a microwave-safe mug. Use a fork or your fingers to break larger pieces for even soaking.
  2. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt until well combined and slightly frothy.
  3. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread pieces in the mug, pressing down gently to ensure all the bread is soaked and coated with the mixture.
  4. Microwave the mug on high for 1 to 2 minutes, or until the mixture is puffed and set in the middle. The top should be golden and slightly firm to the touch.
  5. Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick or skewer into the center; it should come out clean. Let it cool for a minute before optionally topping with butter or syrup. Serve directly from the mug.

Notes

For a richer flavor, add a dash of maple syrup or a sprinkle of powdered sugar after cooking.
